Alma O. Canama is recognized for her significant contributions to the field of crop biotechnology concentrating on molecular mapping, map-based gene discovery, varietal fingerprinting, line purity and hybridity testing, molecular confirmation and characterization of transgenic crops, diversity analysis, and marker-assisted selection on the breeding programs of several Philippine crops including corn, mungbean, banana, sugarcane, tomato, papaya, and eggplant. Her works on the molecular mapping of genes resistant to bacterial stalk rot of corn, downy mildew of corn and Cercospora leaf spot of mungbean have contributed to the understanding of the genetics of plant resistance and to the design of efficient and effective strategies for breeding for resistance to these diseases.
