Dr. Christian Joseph H. Camacho is recognized of his outstanding research contributions in the field of plant pathology especially in fungal population genetics and molecular plant pathology. He is credited for locating the genes that control pathogenicity and aggressiveness on the genetic map of Gibberell zeae (Fusarium graminearum), a fungal pathogen that threatens wheat production around the world. The simple inheritance of pathogenecity and aggressiveness in G. zeae and the genetic variation derived from the crosses he established could lead to a gradual increase of aggressiveness, enhancing efforts of plant breeders to use several genetic distinct sources of resistance to avoid possible disease outbreaks in the future. His researches addressed the genetic basis of ecologically or agriculturally important traits of Fusarium species affecting important fod crops such as toxin production, aggressiveness, vegetable compatibility groups, mating type and female fertility in the hope that it will lead to improved control strategies.
