Dr. Edwino Fernando is recognized for his outstanding research on the taxonomy of the plant family Palmae. As a taxonomist, he has made an important revision of the genus Nenga in Southeast Asia and the Malesian Region and of the genus Heterospathe in the Philippines. He has contributed significantly to our knowledge of the palms of the Philippines including the first comprehensive survey in 70 years and the discovery of at least eight species and one variety which are all new to science.

Dr. Rene P. Felix is recognized of his researches in mathematics, particularly group theory and mathematical crystallography. Dr. Felix has worked on the sublattices of orthogonal lattices; rectangular, square and hexagonal lattices on the plane; the subgroups of finite index of a free Abelian group of rank w; and the ideals of the rings of endomorphisms of a finite Abelian P-group.
