Dr. Arnold B. Hallare is recognized of his outstanding works on the use of multilevel biological markers to understand how chemical stressors, singly or in “cocktails”, such as those associated with waters and sediments, affect the development of aquatic organisms, notably fish. His studies promote the extensive use of appropriate biomarkers, in addition to conventional chemical residue analyses, for a more efficient environmental toxicity and risk assessment of freshwater systems. He has introduced and validated a novel assay for genotoxicity assessment of sedimetnts using cell suspensions from whole embryo instead of cell culture. One of his major works also involved the comparison of the three most commonly used solvents in bioassays for their relative potential to affect the outcome of toxicity studies. His current researches have extended the utility of the said biomarkers for the water quality assessment of groundwater deep wells and of leachate coming from open dumpsites in the Philippines.
